The Russian North is a beautiful, mysterious, and endlessly charming land that is full of quaint old Russian towns, ancient architecture, pristine and virgin nature untouched by civilization. You won't see many photographers here. The Russian North is undeservedly deprived of attention. With that said, the tourist infrastructure has been actively developing for the past few years.
.
These places offer endless possibilities for landscape photography. An amazing, inimitable fusion of nature, architecture, and long-standing subjects of the past turn the trip into an unforgettable adventure. The variety and quality of the captured images allow no one to stay indifferent and compel travelers to come back for more. The highlight feature of the Russian North is its incredibly picturesque sunrises and sunsets. Our trip happens during the northern summer nights, most notably known as white nights, when the heavenly extravaganza seems endless, and the sunset smoothly fuses into the sunrise.

Speaking of the Russian North, I primarily mean Karelia, the Vologda and Arkhangelsk regions. Those places, which harbor the history of ancient Russia, have not been fully explored by landscape photographers. Photographing those places is a unique opportunity to capture images that have never been taken before you.

ITINERARY

Day 1 (July 15)

In the morning, we'll leave Moscow for the Vologda region. Our first stop will be at the Ferapontov Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in the Russian North, which was founded as far back as in 1398.

The monastery is quaintly located on a hill between two lakes. In the evening, we'll capture images of stunning views right from the doorstep of the guest house. The place is excellent for drone photography.
Day 2 (July 16)

In the morning, we'll head off to another pearl of the Vologda region - the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, another ancient monument with a rich history, which is located on the bank of Siverskoye Lake. We'll explore several photography angles here. The pictures turn out particularly good if there's morning fog.

In the afternoon, if you wish, you can join the excursion to the Ferapontov Monastery, where you'll be able to appreciate the original sacral art of Dionisy's frescoes, which have been preserved in its purest form since the 15th century.

In the evening, we'll return to the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery to photograph the sunset.
Day 3 (July 17)

In the morning, we'll photograph the Ferapontov Monastery at sunrise, have breakfast, and go further north through the ancient Russian city of Kargopol to the Kenozerye National Park. The drive takes a long time, so we'll stop along the way to have lunch al fresco and photograph the surrounding landscapes.

In the evening, we'll check into a comfy guest house on the territory of the park on the shores of a picturesque lake. There's a traditional Russian bath for anyone who wishes to indulge in the uniquely Russian experience.

We'll venture out to the photography expedition at sunset -- not far from the guest house, on a hill, there is one of the most beautiful wooden chapels of Kenozero. Thanks to the natural phenomenon of white nights with its consequential "endless" sunsets, we'll have plenty of time to capture images of picturesque places nearby.
Days 4-5 (July 18-19)

We'll spend the next two days in Kenozero.

We'll rent a boat, travel through the adjacent lake system, photograph the surrounding landscapes with their remote wooden churches and tiny chapels, and explore the most beautiful and photogenic places of this remarkable area.

In the afternoon, we'll try the local cuisine, including the Russian famous fish soup, relax, and discuss the captured images.
Day 6 (July 20)

In the morning, we'll have some time to take a few more shots of the nearby chapels at sunrise, and then head off for another long drive.

After breakfast, we will drive along the coast of Lake Onega to Kizhi.
At sunset, we'll photograph from the boat. In the evening, there is just a handful of tourists here, if any, so we'll be able to photograph those iconic places without haste.
Day 7 (July 21)

We'll devote the whole day to Kizhi. We'll photograph at sunrise and sunset. We'll stop right in front of the Kizhi island and rent a boat so we can go wherever we like whenever we want to.
Day 8 (July 22)

After the morning photography session and breakfast, we'll head back. On the way, we'll briefly stop in Veliky Novgorod, one of the most ancient cities in Russia. According to legend, it is from the shores of Lake Ilmen that Russian civilization originates. We'll visit the local Kremlin, take pictures of ancient churches, St. Sophia Cathedral of the 11th century, try the products of the local liquor producer.
Day 9 (July 23)

After lunch, we'll leave for Moscow. We'll most probably arrive in the city closer to the evening. Our tour ends here.
